The final weekend of the Premier League season is almost upon us with all twenty English top-flight clubs in action on Sunday afternoon. Liverpool are already crowned Premier League champions whilst an immediate return to the Sky Bet Championship has long been confirmed for Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton. Therefore, on Sunday the battle for UEFA Champions League qualification will take centre stage.
The top five will all qualify for next season’s Champions League and whilst Liverpool and Arsenal are already assured of their spots just three points separate third and seventh. Of the five clubs battling it out for the three remaining Champions League spots, two of these clubs go toe-to-toe as Nottingham Forest and Chelsea meet in a winner-takes-all showdown at the City Ground. Here at EveryTip.com we’ll preview this key fixture, providing football betting tips, exclusive free bet offers and the latest pre-match odds from our betting partners at William Hill.
Champions League Qualification Permutations
Position | Club | Points | Goal Difference |
---|---|---|---|
3rd | Manchester City | 68 | +26 |
4th | Newcastle United | 66 | +22 |
5th | Chelsea | 66 | +20 |
6th | Aston Villa | 66 | +9 |
7th | Nottingham Forest | 65 | +13 |
Manchester City are in pole position after defeating Bournemouth, needing just a win at Fulham to confirm a top-five finish. Even a draw should suffice given Aston Villa’s poor goal difference. Should Manchester City lose, they can still qualify if at least two of the following happen: Newcastle United fail to beat Everton, Aston Villa fail to beat Manchester United, or Chelsea fail to beat Nottingham Forest. While Nottingham Forest could theoretically leapfrog Manchester City, it would take a 14-goal swing.
Newcastle United, despite a setback against Arsenal, remain largely in control of their destiny. Victory over Everton all but secures a Champions League place. If they draw, they need either a Nottingham Forest v Chelsea stalemate or an Aston Villa slip-up against Manchester United. A loss to Everton could still be enough, provided Aston Villa also lose and the goal difference margin between Newcastle United and Chelsea doesn’t swing too drastically.
Chelsea find themselves in near-identical circumstances to Newcastle United. Beat Nottingham Forest and they’re in. A draw would also work if Aston Villa fail to win or if Newcastle United lose. If Chelsea lose to Nottingham Forest, they still have hope, but only if Aston Villa lose and Newcastle United are defeated by a margin three goals greater than Chelsea’s.
Aston Villa are most hindered by their goal difference. A win over Manchester United might be enough, but they also need help, namely, either a Manchester City defeat or Newcastle United dropping points. A draw could see them through, but only if Newcastle United lose.
Nottingham Forest, the long shots, must beat Chelsea and hope either Newcastle United fail to win or Aston Villa drop points. A draw leaves them needing unlikely defeats elsewhere (Newcastle United to lose by 10 goals, Chelsea by eight) to sneak into fifth.

Form
Nottingham Forest are this season’s dark horses following a superb campaign under Nuno Espirito Santo. The fact that missing out on a spot in the Champions League may now be seen as a disappointment is testament to the season Nottingham Forest have enjoyed. Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at West Ham United last time out to keep their Champions League dreams alive. That win at the London Stadium ended a run of three games without a win and just one win in six Premier League matches.
In contrast, Chelsea have come on strong in the final couple of months of the season and now look well on course to secure a top five finish. A 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United a couple of weeks ago was a disappointment but Chelsea have now won four of their last five league games and lost just one of the last eight.
Nottingham Forest v Chelsea: Head-to-Head
Since Nottingham Forest returned to the top-flight, three of their five matches against Chelsea have ended all-square. The two sides shared the points when drawing 1-1 at Stamford Bridge back in October. Chris Wood had handed Nottingham Forest the lead before his goal was cancelled out by Noni Madueke.
The corresponding fixture at the City Ground ended 3-2 in Chelsea’s favour thanks to goals from Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson. Willy Boly and Callum Hudson-Odoi were on target for Nottingham Forest.
EveryTip.com Betting Tips
Momentum is certainly with Chelsea at the moment and despite having one eye on next week’s UEFA Europa Conference League final, Enzo Maresca’s side look good value for all three points at the City Ground. However, we’re going to sit on the fence here and predict a high-scoring draw on Sunday afternoon. With three of the last five matches between the sides ended even, a draw looks red-hot value at 5/2.
Nottingham Forest’s impressive season has been built on one of the Premier League’s meanest defences. However, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have now failed to keep a clean sheet in seven consecutive Premier League fixtures. Both teams have scored in four of the last five league games involving Nottingham Forest and ‘Both Teams to Score’ looks well priced at 6/10 on Sunday.
The two predictions mentioned above can be combined into one bet with ‘Draw and BTTS’ a solid 10/3 with William Hill. In the ‘Correct Score’ market 1-1 and 2-2 should be considered at 11/2 and 11/1 respectively.
Given our belief that we’ll see plenty of goals at the City Ground on Sunday, where are these goals going to come from? Chris Wood is the obvious choice from a Nottingham Forest perspective and will prove popular at 13/10 to score at any time. However, the value pick could be England international Morgan Gibbs-White. The Forest midfielder has scored in back-to-back league games yet is available at a generous 15/4 to score on Sunday.
Picking a Chelsea goalscorer seems a much more difficult task considering The Blues’ last nine Premier League goals have all been scored by different players. The sensible option would be top scorer and penalty taker, Cole Palmer at odds of 7/4.
