England continue the defence of their European title on Tuesday evening as they take on Italy in Geneva. As we build up towards this hotly-anticipated UEFA Women’s Euros Semi-final, here at EveryTip.com we’ll provide the latest team news, match insights and exclusive betting tips as well as the best pre-match odds.
Where To Watch England v Italy
England v Italy will be played at the Stade de Geneve on Tuesday 22nd July. The match will be televised live in the UK on ITV1 and ITVX whilst live radio commentary will be broadcast on both BBC Radio 5 Live and TalkSPORT.
Road To The Semi-Final
England made a stuttering start to the defence with a 2-1 defeat to France in their opening Group C game. The Lionesses bounced back to earn big wins over Netherlands (4-0) and Wales (6-1) and progress to the knockout stage in second place behind group winners France.
England and Sweden played out a thrilling Quarter-final tie in Zurich as England came from two goals down to draw 2-2 before again coming back from the brink to win 3-2 in what turned out to be a rather low-quality penalty shootout.
Italy were also second best in the group stage, finishing behind Spain in Group B. The Italians won 1-0 against Belgium in their opening match before being held to a 1-1 draw by Portugal and losing 3-1 to world champions Spain. In the Quarter-final, Italy defeated Norway 2-1 in a game played at their Semi-final venue.
Team News
ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
Manager Sarina Wiegman has confirmed that all 23 players are available for England’s Semi-final clash with Italy, including Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze and Lauren James, who were all carrying minor injury concerns following the extra-time win over Sweden. Captain Williamson trained fully on Monday and is expected to start in central defence alongside Alex Greenwood, while Niamh Charles could come in at left-back if Wiegman opts to rotate.
The Lionesses have found attacking rhythm since the reshuffle that saw Lauren James move wide and Ella Toone come into the starting XI, a switch that has allowed James greater freedom and Toone to shine centrally. Chloe Kelly may once again be used as an impact substitute after her game-changing display in the Quarter-final.
Expected Starting XI: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Charles; Walsh, Stanway, Toone; James, Russo, Hemp
ITALY TEAM NEWS
Italy are set to name an unchanged side for the third successive game following their impressive 2-1 win over Norway in the Quarter-finals. Veteran striker Cristiana Girelli leads the line once again after taking her tournament tally to three goals.
There are no injury or suspension concerns for Le Azzurre, who have shown tactical flexibility throughout the tournament, operating in both a 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3 when required. However, Milena Bertolini is likely to stick with a back four to counter England’s wide threat.
Expected Starting XI: Giuliani; Lenzini, Salvai, Linari, Boattin; Giugliano, Caruso, Simonetti; Bonansea, Girelli, Cantore
EveryTip.com Betting Tips
England have won four of the last five encounters with Italy (one draw), including a 5-1 victory in February 2024. The Lionesses are favourites to win this Semi-final tie at 11/20 with TalkSPORT Bet. Italy have scored in 14 consecutive internationals, including all four matches so far as the European Championships whilst England’s four games so far in the tournament have all produced over 2.5 match goals. We are expecting goals in Geneva and over 2.5 match goals could be just the ticket at 4/5 with Virgin Bet. Alternatively, you could combine both of these bets to boost your odds considerably. England to win and over 2.5 match goals with Betano is priced at 27/20.
Four of the five goals conceded by Sarina Wiegman’s Lionnesses at this summer’s Euros have come before half-time whilst Italy have taken the lead in all four games they have been involved in. We are therefore going to look at a few markets where Italy can be backed to strike first:
Cristiana Girelli has scored first in two of Italy’s last three matches and the 36-year-old is likely to lead the line once again on Tuesday evening. Girelli to score first looks well overpriced at 7/1 with Star Sports whilst the 13/5 on offer with Gentleman Jim for Girelli to score at any time looks rock-solid.
We’re expecting Italy to fly out of the blocks whilst England may just grind out the win. 7bet is offering 30/1 on Italy/England in the half-time/full-time betting. Alternatively, AK Bets price the game going to extra-time (draw at 90 minutes) at generous odds of 16/5.
Whilst Cristiana Girelli is the obvious goalscorer pick for Italy, where should your money go if backing the Lionnesses? Lauren Hemp could be the shrewd pick at 3/1 to score at any time with QuinnBet. Hemp is far from prolific, as reflected in those odds but the 24-year-old scored twice in last February’s convincing 5-1 friendly win over Tuesday’s opponents and has already netted at the Euros, scoring the third of England’s six goals against Wales.
