The UEFA Women’s Euros reaches the knockout stage this week and England will continue the defence of their European crown on Thursday evening when they take on Sweden in Zurich. As we look ahead to the second of four Quarter-final ties taking place, here at EveryTip.com we’ll provide match insights, team news and betting tips as well as the latest pre-match odds.
Where To Watch Sweden v England
Sweden v England will be played at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich on Thursday 17th July. The match will kick off at 21:00 (20:00 UK time) and will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Radio commentary will be available on both TalkSPORT and BBC Radio 5 Live.
Group Stage Recap
Sweden made rather light work of Group C and seemed to get better and better as the group stage progressed. Despite being drawn from Pot 3, Sweden won all three of their group games by an 8-1 aggregate scoreline. The 1984 champions defeated Scandinavian rivals Denmark 1-0 in their opening match before earning impressive wins over both Poland (3-0) and Germany (4-1).
England had to settle for second spot in Group D having lost 2-1 to France in their opening match. The Lionesses bounced back with big wins over Netherlands (4-0) and Wales (6-1) and like Sweden, seem to be improving game-on-game.
Sweden v England: Head-to-Head
Sweden and England have faced each other on nine occasions, with Sweden holding a slight edge in the overall head-to-head record. Of those nine meetings, Sweden have won four, England two and three have ended in draws. Sweden have scored 11 goals to England’s 9 across these encounters.
England secured a dominant 4-0 win in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 semi-final, one of their most memorable performances in recent years. However, Sweden had previously beaten England in the third-place play-off at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and again in a 2018 friendly. Their two most recent fixtures in 2024 UEFA Euro qualifiers both ended in draws.
Team News
Sweden Team News
Head coach Peter Gerhardsson is unlikely to deviate from the side that beat Germany 4-1 and topped Group C with three wins from three. Stina Blackstenius (Arsenal) and Lina Hurtig have each scored twice and remain the main attacking threats. Kosovare Asllani, who was directly involved in four of Sweden’s eight group-stage goals (one goal, three assists), is a key creative force. However, she is one yellow card away from missing a potential semi-final. Caroline Seger captains the side.
Expected Starting XI: Musovic; Andersson, Eriksson, Ilestedt, Glas; Angeldahl, Seger; Rytting Kaneryd, Asllani, Rolfo; Blackstenius
England Team News
Manager Sarina Wiegman is expected to stick with the same starting eleven that delivered emphatic back-to-back wins over the Netherlands (4-0) and Wales (6-1). England's line-up has found rhythm and balance since the tactical reshuffle after their opening defeat to France (2-1). Ella Toone was brought into the starting XI, with Lauren James moved to the right flank and Alex Greenwood restored to central defence, a switch that has paid off.
Ella Toone has been directly involved in seven goals at UEFA Women’s Euros despite only two tournament starts (four goals, three assists). She remains one yellow card away from suspension, a possible consideration for Wiegman. There are no fresh injury concerns and the squad appears in good health, mentally and physically, heading into the last eight.
Expected Starting XI: Hampton; Bronze, Greenwood, Bright, Carter; Walsh, Stanway, Toone; James, Russo, Mead
EveryTip.com Betting Tips
With over 2.5 goals landing in all three of England’s group matches and Sweden scoring four against Germany, this looks like another high-scoring encounter. Given the firepower on both sides featuring the likes of Russo, Stanway, Blackstenius, Hurtig, Toone, over 2.5 goals at 19/20 with BetGoodwin is a sensible option.
England’s return of 11 group stage goals was bettered only by world champions Spain whilst Sweden’s 4-1 rout of Germany proves they cannot be taken lightly on Thursday. We’re expecting goals in this Quarter-final tie and whilst England are priced well enough to back in the Match Result market at 11/10 with QuickBet, combining a Lioness win with over 2.5 match goals certainly piques our interest. England to win and over 2.5 match goals is available with Betfred at odds of 12/5.
Georgia Stanway has two goals already and is England’s designated penalty taker, a huge asset in a tight contest. She’s not shy from distance either, famously scoring from range in the Euro 2022 quarter-final and again in the group stages this year. At 15/4 with bet365, Stanway is great value to score at any time.
Having finally opened her account against Wales, Alessia Russo is primed to strike again. The Arsenal striker thrives in knockout games, netting 3 goals in her last 6 tournament knockout matches, including against Sweden in 2022. She’s second only to Ellen White in England’s all-time major tournament goal tally and looks a solid pick to strike first in Zurich. 7bet Sports is offering 17/3 on Russo to score first on Thursday evening.
England are now second-favourites to win the tournament outright, and with Spain on the other side of the draw, their path to the final is clear. At 6/5 with CopyBet to make it to the Final in Basel, this longer-term bet adds value for customers looking beyond Thursday night.
